They made a business decision and basketball decision, everybody could see it wasn't working with this back court and it was time to try something else. They waited a little bit too long but at least they didn't hold on to Garland at a sunk cost. He could have easily eventually become a negative asset I think the emergence of Tyson made this all the more easy. You take some pressure off Mitchell and give your young guys a little more time to grow organically. I think the worst thing that could have done was to have stuck with this Garland Mitchell pairing and hoped it would work out. If your Cleveland, you failed spectacularly 2 years in a row by playing poorly in the 2nd round under two different head coaches. Dan Gilbert was steaming at the team playing so poorly not to mention Detroit playing insanely well that changes had to be made. Garland while I like him simply can't stay healthy and with his contract being what it is had to be moved. To get Harden who even though he's a choker especially in Game 7's is a massive upgrade not to mention if you can convince him to take less money in exchange for an extension (ex. 3/75-100M) is massively worth it. I have really liked the moves they made in addition to bringing in Schroeder and Ellis to solidify the back court. Lonzo I love, but his body is busted and it sucks to see. That wing spot at the 3 could be a problem though as Strus is gonna be out until after the all-star break. I'd like to see if they could upgrade it but I'm doubtful. As for the Clippers, they were screwed. Yea they got a 2nd, but they knew what they were getting into with Harden and his history. Now they have a guy who can't stay healthy and OKC is smiling because it's only a matter of time before Leonard and or Garland get hurt again. Best case scenario, his contract ends at the same time as Zubac not to mention they could sell high on him if he can stay healthy. All it takes is a few teams eager for a point guard but I won't hold my breath. Well I guess for the Clips its a decent consolation prize with the second rounder.. and no picks given up on LAC end. Looking forward to seeing Garland later this year.. Historically, never was a Harden supporter and more often than not rooted against him, exposed his post-season shortcomings -- but I liked him a lot with the Nets, and then the Clippers he was impressive, and a workhorse consistently.. kind of like a rebel mercenary.. at least for the regular season Now Harden is Cleveland's turn. I think he'll help to get out of R2, and maybe the east being weak/wacky enough will get them over the hump.. but I wouldn't be on it. Wildness, though all around.. Harden is a well-known playoff underachiever going back his whole career. I think it's naive to assume Cleveland Harden goes better than Clippers Harden, Nets Harden or 76ers Harden. Even if we ignore that his prime playoff stats look like a whole lot of other better regarded players (or that Nets harden was great before getting hurt), we're comparing him to garland. Harden has been to the playoffs 16 times. If you take his 16th worst numbers in PER, WS48, and BPM, they are still better than Garland's absolute best numbers. Maybe Garland's about to have 3 straight peak LeBron playoffs, but up to now, it hasn't been great. And unless the clippers have a great finish to the season or the warriors have a bad finish (possible), they are going to have trouble escaping the 9th seed, which means they'll have to win a play-in game just to win a play-in game just to play OKC, which doesn't seem ideal for a garland playoff.
