VERDICT The Subaru Forester looks modern, but doesn’t push its familiar all-purpose formula very far into new territory. The sixth generation introduced last year gives the Forester modern curb appeal, but inherited traits lie underneath. Every Forester marries a flat-four engine with standard all-wheel drive and enough extra ground clearance to comfortably handle moderate off-road treks. It's not all old news, though, as the Forester's expansive interior features updated materials that make its cabin feel contemporary. Tough-terrain frequenters can rejoice that the Wilderness trim has reunited with the rest of the Forester pack after a year in limbo. The Wilderness receives the same refresh that the standard models got last year while also adding a few new features, including a ride height increase to 9.3 inches of ground clearance, revised transmission tuning for better off-road responsiveness, larger all-terrain tires, and more. While the Forester provides a fresh enough experience to elevate it above older versions of itself, it appears to tread old ground when compared with niftier rivals like the Mazda CX-50 and the Ford Bronco Sport . Compare the top cars What's New for 2026? After getting lost in the woods and missing out on the 2025 model year refresh, the all-terrain-conquering Wilderness trim gets the same styling update that the rest of the Forester lineup received last year. The freshened Wilderness also gets revised suspension tuning that has been hiked up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance (compared to 8.7 inches on standard models), a shorter final drive ratio for better off-road responsiveness, a selectable Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud drive settings, an uprated transmission cooler, larger all-terrain Yokohama Geolander tires, and improved approach, departure, and breakover angles—the better to clear obstacles on the trail. A revised center console design is new for all trims. The fresh design adds a smartphone slot ahead of the now larger front cupholders, increases the size of the center armrest and console storage box underneath, and features a redesigned shifter that sits closer to the driver. The rear cupholders are now large enough to hold a 32-ounce Nalgene bottle—big news for outdoorsy rear passengers. In the rear, the seatbelt mounting positions have also been improved for additional safety and comfort. A new Onyx Edition joins the lineup. Based on the mid-range Sport trim, the Onyx Edition features all of the Sport's equipment, but rides on black 19-inch wheels and wears darkened exterior and interior trim. C/D Expert Tip: If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new. C/D RATING: 7.5 /10 2025 Subaru Forester Pricing and Which One to Buy The Forester has a sweet host of standard features, including remote keyless entry, LED headlights, and "welcome lighting," which casts a beam of light on the exterior front door handles at night. We recommend the Sport trim level because it's a good mix of equipment, appearance, and price. The Forester Sport gets attractive bronze trim and exclusive wheels, including some additional creature comforts such as heated front seats and an 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. The refreshed Wilderness trim might be the right choice for the off-road-inclined, but unless you are confident that you'll put the oversized all-terrain tires and additional ground clearance to use, it's better to stick with the Sport. Subaru hasn’t released exact pricing for the 2026 Forester yet, but we'll update this story when it does. Compare Cars Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood is a 2.5-liter flat-four engine, which feeds a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive. Output is a meek 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Those who are looking for a bit more gusto might wait for the upcoming Forester Hybrid , which will almost certainly deliver more go-pedal pep. Although the Forester uses a dual-pinion electronic power steering rack similar to what Subaru installs in the WRX sports sedan, the SUV isn't nearly as fun to drive. Steering feedback is minimal, and the suspension is tuned for comfort above all else. Pitch the Forester into a corner, and you'll feel a little wiggle in the rear end, which can be unnerving in that second before it settles in. If your driving style is more sedate and you're hoping for a supple ride, the Forester delivers. When we drove the Forester Wilderness on- and off-road, we found it plenty capable in the rough stuff and were also impressed with its ride quality on the road. What's Your Car Worth? The Forester Wilderness we tested was slower still, needing 8.4 seconds to reach 60 mph. Around town, acceleration feels adequate, though, and under light throttle, the engine's gruff demeanor isn't as noticeable. All other 2026 Forester trims offer 1,500 pounds of towing capacity. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG EPA fuel economy estimates for the Forester land at 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, except for the Sport and Touring trims, which give up 1 mpg in each measure. The Wilderness is rated lower, at 24 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, due to its shorter final drive ratio and beefier tires. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, a Forester in Sport trim managed 31 mpg; the Wilderness only delivered 27 mpg in the same test. For more information about the Forester's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website . Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Spaciousness is the Forester's most noteworthy interior trait. Its upright cabin, tall windows, and panoramic sunroof allow sunshine to flood into its greenhouse by the bucketful. The first of the Forester's two rows features aggressively bolstered seats wrapped in cloth, leather, or, in the case of the Sport and Wilderness trims, a water-repellent leatherette material. Starting with mid-level trims on up, its interior offers a good mix of materials, including a leather-wrapped gear selector and heated and ventilated front seats. A commodious back seat offers plenty of head, hip, and leg room for adults. The Forester provides up to 30 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats in their upright position. Fold the second-row seats down, and cargo space jumps to 75 cubic feet—more than both the Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-50 . We were able to stuff 12 carry-on suitcases into the Forester's rear hatch with the rear seats up and 28 with the rear seats folded down during our testing.
